Due to the hot weather on Sunday, the final round of qualifying was scheduled for 10am on Monday. Harry Bourchier, Nathan Pasha, Thomas Fancutt and Jeremy Beale all secured main draw spots after defeating Steven De Waard, Brian Tran, Matthiew Christopher Romios and Sebastian Korda respectively. Korda is the son of former world no. 2 ranked player and Australian Open champion in 1998, Petr Korda.

In main draw action, we saw Yosuke Watanuki of Japan line up against Germany’s Florian Mayer on centre court. Watanuki took the first set, before Mayer fought back to win the match in three sets. The German played through the discomfort of a forearm injury which he received treatment for during the match. Mayer won 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

In other opening-round matches, Maxime Janvier defeated the number 8 seed Laslo Djere from Serbia 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Marton Fucsovics from Hungary advanced after Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri withdrew from their match. Chile’s Nicholas Jarry defeated France’s Corentin Moutet 7-6(4), 6-3. 18-year-old Moutet was awarded the French Open reciprocal wildcard for the Australian Open to start next week. The 7th seeded Andreas Seppi defeated Germany’s Maximilian Marterer 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(7).

In an all-Australian matchup, Benjamin Mitchell defeated Dane Propoggia 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Australia’s Luke Saville went down to Dominican Republic player and 5th seed Victor Estrella Burgos 6-3, 6-3.

Play continues today with the top seed and defending champion Dudi Sela from Israel up against France’s Hugo Grenier.
